If you were born before 1990, chances are your television schedule was similar to mine when I was younger. It went something like this… Saturday morning cartoons, early morning cartoons / Sportscenter… Nickelodeon… and more specifically “Snick”. Snick stood for “Saturday Night Nickelodeon”, and was, not surprisingly, a block of TV shows on Nickelodeon from 8-10 PM. They included such classics as, Clarissa Explains it All and Are You Afraid of the Dark (Yes, I was in fact afraid of the dark. I never did and never will enjoy scary movies, TV shows, etc…). You might also remember such gems as What Would you Do, Pete and Pete, Salute your Shorts, and who could forget Wild and Crazy Kids. The list really could go on but unfortunately I would like to keep this post rather short.

You might say, Hey Dan! What about those shows like Guts, Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and Nick Arcade (a show most people don’t remember where you actually went into a video game, very cool). Well, if you have digital cable you can still view those shows on Nick’s sister channel, GAS (Games and Sports). I’ll certainly watch GAS from time to time between episodes of Modern Marvels but, honestly, it could be so much better. What if I were to tell you that you that you could watch an episode of Wild and Crazy Kids every Wednesday at three in the afternoon. Is that something you might be interested in? Here’s my proposition. Hear me out.
Change the name of Nick GAS to Nick Classic (this isn’t my idea, it actually came from my roommate Dabrow, but I thought it was great) and cut the crap out of GAS by removing shows like; ehem…Figure it Out. Right now they are broadcasting T.V. shows that I watched as a kid but air commercials geared at today’s youth. They have it all wrong. Who do they think are watching these shows? Honestly, this channel has to be marketed to my generation because I know kids who are 8 or 9 right now aren’t watching it. Children of today have their own generation of pathetic television to watch, ever hear of Dora the Explorer? No one ever cared about learning another language while watching cartoons when I was a younger. Here is my sample schedule for a few hours of Nick Classic:
- 10:00- Salute Your Shorts
- 10:30- Salute Your Shorts
- (Who wouldn’t want to get their day started with back to back episodes of Ug Lee and his Zinc Oxide nose?)
- 11:00- Clarissa Explains it All
- 11:30- Legends of the Hidden Temple
- 12:00- Family Double Dare
- 12:30- What Would You Do
- (To cap off perhaps the best possible hour of game shows in TV history.)
- 1:00- Wild and Crazy Kids
- 1:30- Pete and Pete
- 2:00- Hey Dude
- 2:30- Hey Dude
- (Back to back episodes for obvious reasons.)
- 3:00- Doug
- 3:30- Doug
- (The daily quail-man special)
- 4:00- Rug Rats
- 4:30- Rug Rats
- (A hearty welcome back to Tommy, Phil, Lil, and Chuckie)
- 5:00- Figure it Out
- (I mean you just have to give Summer Sanders a bit of face time.)
- 5:30- Nick Arcade
- 6:00- Guts
- 6:30- Global Guts
- (Let’s go to Mo for the official results, Mo!)
- 7:00- Are You Afraid of the Dark?
- 7:30- Are You Afraid of the Dark?
There you have it folks. 10 AM through 8PM of solid Nick Classic programming. The key here is that they need to market this to kids who are in the 17-25 year range. There is absolutely nothing on daytime television for a college kid to watch. I guarantee this would be an instant hit with the young adult crowd. When you see Nickelodeon introduce this in a few years remember this post. Did I miss anything? Would you make a change to the schedule? Did I miss any great ones? Let me know and post a comment!
- Dan

how can u possibly forget the single best show played on nick gas… GUTS?
An obvious oversight. My apologies. “Lets go to Mo for the results Mo!!!!
You can’t forget Rocko’s Modern Life. Any show that has a character as solid as Heffer can’t go wrong. Also you should spend less time blogging and work on that horrendous jumpshot of yours.
Sorry jewjo. This article was about classic Nick shows. Not shows that used to be on Nick. I put it in the same category as Ren and Stimpy. An entertaining show… but in no way classic. Can you even remember a single episode of Rocko’s Modern Life? I can still remember specific episodes of all those shows (like the fantastic water balloon version of capture the flag on Salute Your Shorts).
I certainly remember the rocko episode when he flys to vegas…easily one of the all time best. but still a great list.
i love nick gas!
Gotta give much love and respect to Omar from Wild and Crazy Kids. I miss that guy.
I remember an incredible episode where Rocko orders some ridiculously powerful vacuum that ends up sucking up his entire neighborhood, him, and eventually the universe. It might be one of the greatest existential/metaphysical pieces of the century.
How about the Rocko episode where Mr. Bighead gets a space monkey and then Rocko and Hef head out on a space ship for 20 years and then return with the monkey and banana people who are pissed off at Bighead. In the interim time Philbert has 4 children, one of whom looks like Heffer for no reason. It is completely ludicrous.
well if you put on rocko then you’d have to put angry beavers or rocket power…those were great cartoons!
I love this list!! okay so I was born in ’95 but i was named after Clarissa Darling and of course if your mother was/ is obbsessed with nameing her kids after her favorite actresses and tv/ movie character of course I have name like Clarissa Cher Walsh. (yes Cher form Clueless) My sister is Brenda Clare Walsh (no joke, I know how 90210 that is, but it gets worse, my dads name is Brandon Walsh, and my moms… Kelly Marlene Walsh) ((I swear, no joke!!)) then I have a new sister and her name is Victoria Davey (like Tori Spelling) and then my step or half (I think they are step, not sure of the actual relation) siblings(mom) are Donna Eve, Jennifer Kelly, Valerie Sabrina and then on my dads side Shannen Rachel (rachel Green from friends) and so the list continues. My mom is about to have another baby so email me if you wanna know the name.
Oh by the way: my step sibs are hardley here in case your wondering about the whole ‘big family thing’
It’s amazing
